New video game releases are the main thing that keep players going back to their local stores. However, there are some video games that will always be great, but they have already met their sales quota. Therefore, there is no need for developers to keep these games on the shelves.

Rumor: God of War Original Trilogy Remaster Could Be Coming

A gaming industry insider shares that the original God of War PlayStation trilogy could possibly be getting a remastered release.

There have been times in the past when some of these old games have become relevant again, though. If a franchise is about to receive a new entry, or a game has reached a certain age, it will get the remaster treatment. This approach has already worked with the original Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon PS1 trilogy remasters, and even the GTA PS2 games got a new coat of paint in 2022. As such, there are plenty of other gaming trilogies out there that could do with a remaster.

5 Fable

This Flagship Xbox Franchise Has Not Seen Any Attention For Nearly A Decade

Fable 4 Could Come Full Circle with the First Game if It Let Players Turn into Balverines

Fable (2004)

Released
September 14, 2004

Genre(s)
Action RPG

The original Fable series began in 2004, a fantasy RPG that allowed player’s choices to affect the outcome of the story. This first game was so successful that it spawned two sequels that made the franchise a classic trilogy with very loose story connections. The first Fable game has even received the remaster treatment for its tenth anniversary, but the franchise has been very quiet for nearly ten years.

Fortunately, a new Fable game was announced in 2020, giving old fans nostalgia for the original three games. Since Fable has been a dormant franchise for so long, it might be time to remaster the previous three games in the new Fable engine to cash in on this nostalgia, and get new fans onboard with the franchise before Fable 4 is released.

4 Dragon Age

A Fantasy RPG That Has Been Overshadowed

Released
November 3, 2009

Dragon Age Origins is a fantasy RPG that was released by BioWare in 2009. The original trilogy of games had a similar trajectory as the Fable series, with the first game being a rousing success and the two follow-ups falling in favor slightly. However, BioWare did announce in 2018 that Dragon Age was coming back with Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

What to Expect From Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in 2024

The year fans have been waiting for, at least one of them, appears to be coming in 2024 for the highly-anticipated Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

All this talk had fans wondering whether a remaster of the Dragon Age games, complete with all DLC, would be on the way in an effort to help promote the fourth game in the series. So many other franchises, like Baldur’s Gate and Dark Souls, have taken some of the role-playing aspects of Dragon Age and had great success. Therefore, there is still a great hunger out there for a new game release like this. Sadly, there is little news about what is to happen with Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, or if a trilogy remaster will ever happen.

3 The Sims

A PC Giant Started In A Very Humble Form

The Sims

Released
February 4, 2000

Genre(s)
Life Simulation

There are few gamers out there who cannot instantly recognize the gameplay of The Sims at a glance. However, this iconic life simulator had very humble beginnings in the year 2000. The PC exclusive title had very limited options when it came to creating families and building homes, something that the three follow-up games have vastly improved upon. While The Sims 4 is currently showing new gamers what exactly can be done with a video game like this, there are still fans of the franchise who remember the early versions of this series.

With no sign of a Sims 5 on the horizon, perhaps it would be a good idea for EA to remaster the original trilogy with everything intact from the first releases. Such a move would demonstrate how far the franchise has come in such a short time, and will also give older players a nostalgia hit. It would be cool to try and control a new family with all the present challenges of the original game but with none of the bugs.

2 Far Cry

An FPS That Has Gone Above And Beyond Most Expectations

Far Cry hit shelves in 2004, and was a standard open-world first-person shooter. The second game in the series grew to include more of the same gameplay but tried some new and experimental ideasa with its approach to open-world gameplay. Then the third game in the series took the ideas from both games and started to become more of an action adventure game from the franchise began, pioneering a large portion of the “Ubisoft formula” that the publisher’s many games still follow to this day.

Far Cry 7 has yet to be announced, but if it is in development, then are numerous actors who would make a great fit to play a Far Cry villain.

Luckily, new console generations have been released, which has allowed Far Cry to keep expanding into its own style, with more content than anyone could have expected when the first game was initially released. As such, a new look at these older games in the series with a new coat of polish would allow fans to replay the games in order again, without having to deal with the complicated physics of the PS3 and 360 eras.

1 Donkey Kong Country

A Nintendo Platformer Everyone Loved

Donkey Kong Country

Released
November 24, 1994

Genre(s)
Platformer

Platforming video games were very different back in the 90s. This is something that many gamers learned when the Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy was released, and was quickly named as the new “Dark Souls of platformers” by modern players. Another big platforming franchise from the same era was the Donkey Kong Country series from Nintendo. All of these games were exclusive to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System at the time, and a few of these older game have been released for the Game Boy.

However, the fact that the series has continued with sequels for the Nintendo Wii U shows that there is still an appetite for the series, so a remaster of the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy could be a lucrative move.
