Texas recently held a groundbreaking ceremony in Laredo for the $360 million US 59 Loop project, part of the future I-69 corridor.
The project will upgrade the US 59 Loop to improve traffic flow and safety. Daily, an average of 70,350 vehicles travel the sections of US 59 that will be upgraded. This is projected to increase 57.8 percent by 2054, reaching 121,700 vehicles daily.
Work includes four overpasses and widening the road from International Boulevard to East Corridor Road. The overpasses will be located at Del Mar Boulevard, Jacaman Road, Shiloh Road, and University Drive.
Construction will take approximately five years.
“As Laredo continues to grow with commercial and non-commercial traffic, securing robust federal transportation funding for South Texas remains a top priority of mine in Congress,” U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), U.S. House Appropriations Committee senior member, said at the event. “The US 59 Loop upgrade will help improve traffic and safety while encouraging future economic development – a major win for Laredo.”
Cuellar joined state and local leaders at the ceremony.
The project has received $288 million consisting of federal transportation funding, and Webb County has been authorized to receive nearly $1.5 billion in federal transportation funding over the next 10 years.
