Some Eagles fans in Philadelphia are threatening to change their cable provider after Comcast’s Xfinity internet and cable service went down on Super Bowl Sunday.
Residents of the Fishtown neighborhood began reporting connection problems on social media midday on gameday. Entering an address in the River Wards neighborhood into the official Xfinity outage map returned a confirmation of the disruption.
The automated message promises a fix by 6 p.m. — half an hour before kickoff in the Eagles-Chiefs NFL championship matchup.
“We’re aware that you may be experiencing a Internet [sic] interruption and are working to resolve the issue by approximately 02/12/2023 06:00 PM (Eastern),” the online message reads. “We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience.”
The Philly-headquartered communications giant hasn’t yet issued a formal statement about the disruption, but plenty of folks are furious about the situation.
After all, this is almost a holiday in this sports-obsessed city. People have prepped food, spent on decor, made efforts to pull together the perfect gameday fit (no one will top Fletcher Cox, but still), potentially even bought TVs specially to show the big game — and now can’t get it to show up.
If you’re in that situation, there are a few potential workarounds, thanks to livestreams like the Fox Sports app and free trials on FuboTV and YouTubeTV.
But if you don’t have streaming infrastructure already hooked up to your big stream, the Xfinity outage is a huge kink in game-watching plans.
