Port of Clarkston Completes Second High-Speed Internet Project in Asotin County – Big Country News

CLARKSTON – The Port of Clarkston has successfully completed a major high-speed internet infrastructure project, the second fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) initiative in Asotin County. The new network, situated in the Grantham Elementary School Service Area—bounded by Chestnut Street to the north, Fair Street to the south, and between 6th and 13th Streets—now offers up to 1,000 households access to internet speeds as fast as 100 gigabytes per second, depending on the service plan chosen.

The construction, completed by Summit Utility Contractors, LLC of Lewiston, Idaho, concluded on April 15, 2024. Several internet service providers (ISPs) including Airbridge Broadband, First Step Internet, Inland Cellular, Intermax Networks, and Rodeo Networks have partnered with the Port to provide services. These ISPs began offering high-speed internet to customers in the area last week, leasing the newly installed fiber infrastructure from the Port to deliver the service.

This project was notably supported by a $1,775,282 grant from the Washington State Public Works Board, funded as a pass-through from the US Department of the Treasury’s America Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), Capital Projects Fund. The Port contributed an additional $23,000 to match the grant.

The completion of this project marks a significant milestone in the Port of Clarkston’s ongoing efforts to enhance the local infrastructure, encourage private investment, and improve the quality of life for Asotin County residents. The Port has been actively deploying dark fiber in the county since 2013 and emphasizes the importance of public-private partnerships in extending broadband access. A new FTTH project in Census Tract 9604 is slated to begin construction in late April 2024, continuing the expansion of essential services in the region.
