The Swedish manufacturer started work on the CCGT program in 2003 – running the first test at the Knutstorp race track in 2008, Autoevolution reports.

But regulation changes meant that Koenigsegg would have to significantly ramp up production numbers to enable it to commit to a racing programme.

Koenigsegg started the project knowing they had to build 20 production cars, but new regs required 350 examples per year.

That’s why the car offered at auction is the only example to have ever been built.

The rear-wheel-drive Koenigsegg CCGT is powered by a 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine, producing 591bhp – so it’ll be plenty fast enough for even the most serious racer.

Tim Schofield, head of motoring in the UK for Bonhams Cars, said: “Being the 30th anniversary of our very first auction at Goodwood, we were really hoping for a significant sale, and so we are, of course, thrilled to have sold the Koenigsegg for such an outstanding price.

“It is a true unicorn supercar, which was hard to value, but I feel that the price we achieved is well worthy of its remarkable stature.”
