Lidl is finally bringing back ‘elite’ discontinued snack after 3 years of begging

Croissants, doughnuts, pizza, fresh bread… Lidl’s in-store bakery has just about every delicious carby treat you could ever want.

This is perhaps why it was recently crowned the UK’s favourite supermarket bakery, beating out rivals such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

But for a while one thing has been missing from the bakery section, and shoppers were devastated by the loss. We’re talking, of course, about Lidl’s cheese twists which were discontinued back in 2021.

Ever since the savoury pastry left the bakery shelves three years ago, fans of the iconic product have been begging the German retailer to bring them back.

The flaky pastry, which is intertwined with a rich British mature cheddar, has been hailed as ‘the best bakery item’, ‘the bomb’, ‘top notch’ and ‘god tier’ by shoppers on social media, with one person asking if they were ‘laced with crack’ because they tasted so good.

Another pondered: ‘If you go to Lidl and come out without buying a cheese twist, have you really, truly been to Lidl?’

Shoppers haven’t stopped thinking about the product over the years, and they haven’t let Lidl forget about them either.

On X (formerly Twitter), @Bambz11693351 wrote in 2023: ‘Any news on the cheese twists? They are so missed.’ As @glitter99x said: ‘Please can you get the Yeovil stores to bring the cheese twists back. My absolute favourite.’

Similarly, @stevething was baffled by their disappearance, proclaiming: When are these coming back!!!?? Why were they discontinued when they were so popular.’

And @Laura74531322 asked: ‘Any update on the cheese twists? Why were they discontinued… they were one of the best bakery items you sell.’

Meanwhile, @minimwe thought it was ‘criminal’ that the baked treat had been discontinued, and @lwescott claimed that the Cheese Twist was their ‘one lost love’ and it being axed had ‘ruined their life’.

@LilyGoodwood added: ‘For my last meal on death row I’d ask for 26 cheese twists from Lidl bakery.’

All of these posts didn’t go unnoticed as Lidl has been listening and cheese twists are officially coming back from May 30.

However, it’s worth noting the price has risen since they were last on sale, going up 30p from 69p to 99p.

Teasing the return of the product, Lidl shared an Instagram reel, with a playlist featuring songs such as The Twist by Chubby Checker, and Say Cheese by Paul Russell.

To celebrate the return of the product, the supermarket has launched an amusing merch giveaway offering free ‘Twisties’ fan bundles to customers. This includes a limited-edition T-shirt, a friendship bracelet and a free Lidl Plus coupon.

If this weren’t enough, a further 15,000 cheese twists will be given away fro free via Lidl Plus Coupon through the website.

Cheese twist megafans can get their hands on a Twisties bundle by visiting www.lidltwisties.co.uk. Simply share your name, address, email and the phone number linked to your Lidl Plus account. The giveaway will be open from 10am on May 24 until June 2.

This comes after Lidl revealed it was making a big change to its loyalty scheme

The supermarket already gives shoppers regular personalised coupons based on their regular purchasing, but they will now offer weekly discounts for members on a selection of items. These discounts will change each week.
