How to build a tax-free retirement corpus


Not many investors know whether they have invested in the right funds and if their fund portfolio is on track. The Portfolio Doctor assesses the health of the fund portfolio, examines the schemes and their suitability with regard to the goals and, if required, recommends corrective measures. The advice given is based on the performance of the funds, the risk profile of the investor as well as his financial goals.

PORTFOLIO CHECK-UP

  • Has been investing in equity funds for the past 7-8 years.
  • Funds are good but some laggards need to be removed.
  • Goals are very ambitious and need big hike in investment.
  • SIPs also need to be hiked by 5-10% every year to reach goal targets.
  • Home furnishing alone will need Rs.1 lakh investment per month.
  • If not possible to increase investments, consider pruning goal targets.
  • Consider taking a loan for meeting education goals.
  • Retirement goal reduced from Rs.1.5 lakh to Rs.1.2 lakh per month.
  • Defer retirement by 2-3 years to build adequate corpus.

  • Portfolio has smalland mid-cap skew. Be ready for high volatility.
  • Open NPS account to build retirement corpus and save tax.
  • Opt for balanced allocation in NPS.
  • Also consider opening PPF account to build a tax-free retirement corpus.
  • Review investments and rebalance at least once in a year.
  • Reduce risk when goal is near so that you don’t miss the target.
