Ford Mustang 60th Anniversary Limited Edition Coming This Year

Key Takeaways

  • Mustang celebrates its 60th year in existence with a new 60th Anniversary Special Edition to mark the occasion.
  • Special edition to be revealed at Charlotte Motor Speedway event on April 17.
  • Mustang was once again the world’s best-selling sports car in 2023, selling 59,000 units globally.

Way back in 1964, the Ford Mustang entered production. 60 years later, it’s officially clinched the title of the best-selling sports car in America for 2023 – and that’s nothing new either. In fact, the Mustang has been the best-selling sports car worldwide for more than a decade now.

In celebration of the wildly successful nameplate’s 60th anniversary, Ford has teased a limited-edition appearance package that will be unveiled in front of the pony car’s biggest fans next month. Exclusive to Mustang owners, the event takes place on April 17 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. Registration for the event is now open on the Ford website. The model will wear a special Vermillion Red and Ebony Black logo, revealed at the 2024 New York International Auto Show, which was inspired by the badging and wheel center caps of the original Mustang, which debuted 60 years ago at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York.

Additionally, a special feature will be made available to all Mustang owners with the SYNC 4 infotainment system on April 17, provided they activate the ‘Automatic Software Updates’ feature in their settings menu. Expect customized visuals for the infotainment and instrumentation, and likely a retro gauge cluster not unlike the Fox Body Mustang gauges already available for the seventh-gen Stang.

More To Come This Year

While we like the idea of a special appearance package with unique red fender and trunk badges (not dissimilar to the 50th Anniversary M badges), just as was the case when BMW celebrated its milestone in 2021 and just like when Porsche celebrated 75 years of existence and 60 years of the 911 last year, we expect something more substantial at some point this year.

The German automaker has unleashed some rather special machinery over the last 12 months.

More special editions are all but guaranteed, but what we’re most excited about is the Mustang GTD. This Multimatic-developed supercar is targeting a sub-7-minute Nürburgring lap time, and achieving that as part of the 60th-anniversary festivities would be oh-so-sweet.

Impressive Sales Success

Ford reports that more than 59,000 customers took delivery of a Mustang last year across the world, of which 44,960 were sold in the United States. That’s impressive, considering that the Dodge Challenger and its many special editions were in their last year of production and only sold 44,960 cars. But the Mustang wasn’t the best-selling muscle car – that accolade went to the Dodge Charger, shipping 75,920 units in 2023.

Elsewhere on the best-selling sports car charts, the best-selling “two-seater convertible sports car,” the Mazda MX-5 Miata, sold fewer than 9,000 models last year. Toyota’s GR Supra managed only 2,652 sales, and the Nissan Z barely blipped the radar with just 1,771 units shifted. Like the Challenger, the Camaro said goodbye last year (2024 MY Camaros are leftover stock, effectively), but it had a strong final showing, finding 31,028 buyers.

In 2024, the Mustang has no real competition, and we expect another year of runaway sales.

“We’ve sold more Mustangs in our history than the population of major cities like Chicago, London, or Seoul. as we get set to celebrate Mustang’s 60th anniversary, that same passion and excitement continues with our seventh-generation Mustang, now headed to customers in 85 markets around the world.”
