POETRY WORKSHOP: Join the library for a two-week weekend poetry workshop “The Creative Fire of Folklore” with published poet Susan Comninos. The workshop will be held Saturday, March 25 and Saturday April 1, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Participants must commit to both sessions. Comninos will discuss and employ techniques for incorporating elements of your own community’s folklore into identity-based poems that can function as your own “origin stories.” Come prepared to try your hand at techniques for folding family sayings, stories, and more into poetry that’s at once individual and universal. Together, we’ll have fun with writing exercises and discuss published poetry. We’ll also consider how some poets come to assume the role of “inheritor” of their family or community’s legacy. STPEHENTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY: Stephentown Town Historian Pat Flint will give a talk on Stephentown Doctors on Sunday, April 2, at 2:00 p.m. This Stephentown Historical Society program meeting will be held at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road, Stephentown, New York. The early doctors in Stephentown included veterans of the Revolutionary War, an early promoter of inoculation against smallpox, and a jailed Anti-Rent War leader. Dr. Antoinette Russell practiced in more modern times and volunteered for medical recovery efforts in Serbia after World War I before returning to Stephentown to complete her career. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. USS SLATER OPENING DAY: USS SLATER, the last Destroyer Escort afloat in America, will open to the public for her 26th season in Albany! Opening day is Wednesday April 5th, 2023 at 10 AM. No reservations are required, and guided tours start every 30 minutes. Admission is charged. Adults: $10.00, Seniors & Veterans: $9.00, Children under 18: $8.00, and children under 5 years old are admitted for free. We are currently booking Group Tours, for 10 or more people, for Spring and Summer, call the Ship’s Store to schedule your visit! The ship will be closed Sunday 9 April 2023 for Easter Sunday. USS SLATER will be open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., through 26 November 2023. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. HISTORY PROGRAM: Greenbush Historical Society Presents “Fun On Two Wheels: A Short History of the Bicycle – Plan to join the Greenbush Historical Society on Sunday, April 16, at the East Greenbush Community Library. Our speaker will be David Chinery who will present a short history of bicycles dating from 1815 to 1900. The bicycle is an incredibly simple machine by today’s standards but it took a long time to develop. Bicycles in use during this period include the draisine, the velocipede, the boneshaker, the high wheel and the safety bicycle. Along with an impact on transportation, the development of the bicycle brought about social changes for both men and women. On display will be a Columbia bicycle, the most modern of the year 1898, which lacks one of today’s most crucial bicycle elements. EARLY ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT & EDUCATION: EASE is an eight-week interactive learning program for people with early stage memory loss and their care partners. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, as well as current research and treatment plans. Other topics covered during the 8 weeks include legal and financial preparation, communication and compensatory strategies, home safety, and community resources. A support group is also offered at the end of each session. The program will be hosted every Monday April 17 to June 12 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Alzheimer’s Association Northeastern New York Chapter Office at 1003 New Loudon Rd. in Colonie. This program is free but registration is required. FOOD DRIVE: The Pines at Glens Falls is collaborating with The Veterans & Community Housing Coalition to host our 3rd annual drive thru – food drive to assist local veterans and their families. As in the past, the event will be a “drive thru” for the community and local businesses to drop off either non-perishable items or monetary donations. The drop off time will be between 11:00 am-1:00 pm on Friday, April 21st. In addition, on the day of the event, there will be area businesses set up with information, giveaways, raffles and more.

At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. WING FEST: The Glens Falls Collaborative will be hosting its annual Wing Fest event on Saturday, April 29, 2023, from noon to 3 p.m. in Downtown Glens Falls. The event is a competition between restaurants for the best wings. Tasting is from noon to 3 p.m. and an awards ceremony at the bandstand in City Park at 3:30 p.m. will close out the event, with multiple categories of winners. There will also be live music in Downtown Glens Falls. The 2nd annual Michael DuBray Inferno Wing Eating Competition takes place at 2 p.m. on Glen Street during Wing Fest. Competitors will pay a registration fee of $25 that will go into a Michael DuBray Scholarship Fund. The winner will receive a trophy and bragging rights. SARATOGA NIGHT MARKET: The Saratoga Night Market is opening to the public this spring with a focus on female-developed products and businesses. Shoppers can visit the market on scheduled Friday and Saturday nights at the Palette Saratoga co-working space in the lower level of The Collamer Building, at 480 Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs.Each market will vary, with rotating vendors. The Saratoga Night Market will be open on April 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29; May 5, 6, 19, 20 and 27; June 2, 3, 9, 10, 23 and 24; as well as July 7, 8, 21, 22, 28 and 29. Hours are 5 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. Vendor spots are sold out for April, with limited spaces available for May, June and beyond. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. Whether you have experience knitting or crocheting or you want to start learning a new skill, this group is for you! Participants will work together to stitch blankets and other needed items to donate to local homeless shelters and outreach groups. Participants are also welcome to work on their own personal projects. Bring your own knitting needles and crochet hooks or use what we have available. SUMMER SPACTACULAR: Saratoga Performing Arts Center announces its inaugural fundraiser to kick off the summer season, Summer SPACtacular. Slated for 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday, June 2, the event will feature an expansive celebration across the SPAC grounds that includes live music, a multi-course “Summerscape Supper,” culinary tastings, cocktails, a whiskey and cigar lounge, fireworks and a dance party on SPAC’s historic stage. This first-time fundraiser will benefit SPAC’s mission, residencies and youth education initiatives.
With two different ticketing options – a “Party Pass” and an “All-Access Pass” – attendees will have the opportunity to experience SPAC like never before.
