SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake track and field teams returned home on Tuesday and recorded a dual meet sweep over the Plattsburgh Hornets.

The Red Storm girls won 11 out of the 16 events to secure a 97-35 victory over the Hornets, while Saranac Lake’s boys earned a 63-58 win. Both squads are now 1-2 overall.

The Red Storm’s girls head coach Jason Wamsganz said his team did a nice job of taking care of business.

“We remind them of the importance of second and third place finishes in track and field, and they really pulled through tonight to secure those places and ultimately be able to pull away from Plattsburgh,” he said. “We outscored them in seconds and thirds by a margin of 20 to five.”

Ally Bourgeois and Maggie Reed paced the Red Storm girls with three wins each. Bourgeois won the 100 and 200-meter dash and the long jump. Reed claimed the 100 and 400 hurdles, as well as the triple jump.

“We saw a lot of good things and kids really starting to compete and figuring out how to run their races,” Wamsganz said. “The technique and strategy that we are working on in practice is beginning to transition to the competitions, we started seeing this last week and it was really evident tonight. Maggie Reed and Ally Bourgeois had a tremendous meet for us. Addi Ash, Lena Holmes and Nora Daley all turned in another strong performance for us.”

Daley, an eighth-grader, earned her first-ever individual varsity win in the 1,500-meter event. Gracen Foster and Brook Burke also posted individual wins for Saranac Lake in the throwing events, taking respective firsts in the shot put and discus.

Ash, Holmes, Raiana Baumann and Maggie Reynolds teamed up to win the 4×800 relay in 11:34.8. The Red Storm’s 4×100 relay team of Zuleyka Oliveras, Ava Faubert, Maddy Stavenhagen and Jovie Schenk also won. Their efforts helped secure the team’s first victory of the season, after falling to Saranac Central and Peru earlier.

“We faced two of the toughest teams in our first two meets; that experience early on may help us down the stretch,” Wamsganz said. “I think the girls can do some good things moving forward, we’ll take it one meet at a time, one event at a time and see where we are by the end of the week.”

The Hornets collected five wins in the girls competition as Elizabeth Chase won the 800, Abigail McLean claimed the 3,000 and Jaelynn Lacey took home the high jump. Plattsburgh also won the 4×400 relay and the 400 race.

Saranac Lake’s boys found themselves in a closer contest, as the Hornets won eight events, including all of the relays, sprints and hurdles.

“It was pretty lopsided in favor of PHS in all the sprints and relays, but then the strength of our team took over,” Red Storm boys coach Cy Ellsworth said.

Seniors Dustin Burke, Jake Kollmer and Liam Nobles were all two-time winners for Saranac Lake. Burke swept the throwing events with a pair of wins in the shot put and discus. Nobles won the long jump and triple jump, while Kollmer claimed the 1,600 and 3,200 events.

The Red Storm’s Emmett VanBuskirk and Alden Cecunjanin also picked up wins in the 800 and high jump, respectively.

“We won the meet because our younger athletes like Sam Duprey (a sophomore) finished second in shot and second in discus,” Ellsworth said. “Brandon McGinnis-Theis (a sophomore) finished third in the shot and discus. Everest Wolford (a sophomore) finished third in the 400, Colin Glascock (a sophomore) got us third in the 800. We expect Jake, Dustin and Liam to score a ton of points for us, but now we have high expectations for our sophomore class, which is promising for the future.”

Julian Brooks, Braydon Caraballo and Jonathan McCown led the Hornets with two wins each. Caraballo claimed the 100 dash and 200. McCown won the 110 hurdles and ran a leg in the 4×400 relay. Brooks also ran on the 400 relay and won in the 4×400 relay.

After claiming its first victory, Ellsworth said his team is beginning to see some real improvement. He added that it started last weekend, when they finished third overall out of 13 teams at the Peru Night Hawk Under the Lights Invitational.

Up next, the Red Storm track teams will travel to Clintonville for a meet today at 4:30 p.m. against the AuSable Valley Patriots and the Peru Nighthawks. Following that, the team will host Beekmantown at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday in their final home meet of the season.
