Having leaked Samsung’s dramatic Galaxy S21 Ultra redesign last week, acclaimed smartphone leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka @OnLeaks) has revealed the phone’s cameras are likely to be even more radical than expected.
Breaking down the information on his Voice profile page, Hemmerstoffer explains that the DVT model of the Galaxy S21 Ultra is equipped with “up to five rear cameras or at least… four cameras plus a yet unknown sensor.” DVT stands for Design Validation Test and it is the penultimate step before a product enters mass production. So what you see at the DVT stage is usually what you get.
Hemmerstoffer has previously stated that “I don’t know the exact purpose of each lens yet, but recent rumors suggest that the Galaxy S21 Ultra could sport two Telephoto/Periscope lenses. Alongside them are expected to be wide and ultra-wide lenses.”
Interestingly, popular tipster Ishan Agarwal claims these lenses will be a primary 108-megapixel ISOCELL lens, a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 10MP telephoto lens with another 10MP periscope telephoto lens for 5x optical zoom. On the front of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung is again expected to fit a 40MP camera matching its predecessor.
If correct, this would be a camera arrangement unlike anything I’ve seen and, combined with the slick design and early release date, looks set to give the iPhone 12 range some next-generation competition a lot sooner than expected. Especially given the limitations emerging around Apple’s new models.
