A Portland man was killed Saturday when his car crossed the oncoming lane and left the roadway, hitting several trees.
The Portland Police Bureau said Sunday that a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Nazariy V. Senchuk, 23, hit the trees at high speed around 5:20 p.m. The crash occurred in the 12900 block of Southeast Flavel Street in Portland.
Senchuk died at the scene. Police said he was ejected from or fell out of the vehicle.
No one else was involved in the crash, and police did not identify what caused it.
The Police Bureau said the crash marks the city’s 42nd traffic fatality to date in 2019. That already surpasses the more than the 20-year average of 36 traffic deaths a year and the 2018 toll of 34 fatalities.
That’s despite the city’s efforts to eliminate traffic deaths by 2025, a goal outlined in the Vision Zero campaign the city adopted in 2016.
