In a shocking announcement, the Macallan has unveiled a brand new set of 6 different whiskies. The new series has been named The Red Collection. The most exciting part? Two of the bottles in the series are the oldest whiskies ever released by the world’s most collected whisky brand.

The newly announced set includes 6 different bottles, The Macallan 40 Year-Old, Macallan 50 Year-Old, Macallan 60 Year-Old, Macallan 71 Year-Old, and then two whiskies aged for 74 years and 78 years. The last two are the oldest releases ever made by The Macallan, marking an important moment for the the global whisky industry. The announcement has been shared widely across social media platforms by the many brand ambassadors and fans of the Macallan. The theme of the colour Red, focuses on a very important colour for the Macallan, from the founder’s surname, Alexander Reid. Reid means ‘the red one’, a name he was given due to his fiery red hair. The colour also means different things across the world, like marriage in India or luck in certain Asian cultures. With such high age statements the Macallan has went above and beyond to deliver some of it’s most mature and complex liquid to date. According to the Macallan website: ‘The Macallan Red Collection reflects our deep respect for time, tradition and craftsmanship. The distinctive colour celebrates the rich range of reds present naturally in The Macallan—in every step of the process.’

The Red Collection is an ongoing series, according to the brand’s announcement. So, we can expect more expressions to be added in the years to come. Beyond this, the collection will launch with a series of illustrations and animated videos by Spanish artist, Javi Aznarez, which add greatly to the new series branding. For the Red Collection, Aznarez’s created a story exploring three of the most important moments in the history of The Macallan, as seen from present time. The animation features music performed by world-famous Scottish violinist, Nicola Benedetti.

Looking at the liquid, each of the releases have been created and signed off by Kirsteen Campbell, the Macallan recently appointed Master Whisky Maker at the distillery, who is also the first woman in history to occupy this role. ‘Created from some of the world’s oldest and rarest casks it is an incredible privilege to have crafted The Red Collection, the pinnacle of The Macallan’s portfolio,’ says Kirsteen Campbell, Master Whisky Maker at The Macallan.

Every release will feature a very limited number of bottles, details on sales are yet to be announced. Beyond the standard sets, two sets have been created with unique, illustrated labels designed by Aznarez. The first set will remain in The Macallan’s archives, while the second one will be auctioned off by Sotheby’s from October 22 to October 31st. The funds from the auction will go to London’s food charity, City Harvest, which gives surplus from the food industry to people in need across the city, making 80,000 meals a week.
