About Land Rover

History of Land Rover

Land Rover’s roots go back to the Rover Company, a British entity founded in 1878. Rover Company originally performed bicycle, motorcycle, and vehicle manufacturing, before helping with World War II efforts.

After the war, Rover began to produce experimental cars. Chief Designer Maurice Wilks penned the first Land Rover design in 1947, hitting the market in 1948 where it kicked off unbridled success for the Rover off-road vehicles. It also made our list of the best classic cars around.

Through the next three decades, Rover experienced various ownership and branding changes while producing the iconic Land Rover off-road vehicle. It was the British response to the Jeep, one of the best American car brands.

In 1970, the Range Rover hit the market. This model continually progressed upmarket by balancing off-road ruggedness with interior comfort, landing at the legendary status of today as the ultimate in off-road luxury SUV.

BMW acquired the Rover Group in 1994, then sold part of that to Ford as Land Rover in 2000. And in 2008, Ford sold Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors. Tata formed Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC, which still owns Land Rover today.

Understanding Land Rover’s car range

Land Rover has forever focused on capable SUVs. Every one of today’s Land Rovers incorporates the four-wheel drive spirit, but now the brand also includes luxurious amenities across the board. It is a luxury SUV automaker in every sense.

The most exclusive, expensive, and luxurious Land Rover SUV models fall under the Range Rover model names.

To clarify, Range Rover models are made by Land Rover. The full name is the Land Rover Range Rover. Since this is a mouthful, many people drop Land Rover when referring to any Range Rover model.

These include the Range Rover, the slightly smaller Range Rover Sport, the midsize crossover SUV Range Rover Velar, and the compact crossover luxury SUV Range Rover Evoque.

The Range Rover SV is a highly-customized version of the Range Rover produced by the Special Vehicle Operations unit. It is the epitome of Range Rover as a status symbol.

The Land Rover Discovery car is a midsize SUV that blends off-road capability with family-friendly seating for seven, while the Land Rover Discovery Sport is a smaller version and the company’s most affordable offering.

The Land Rover Defender is the ultimate off-road machine, coming in two and four-door options with seating for up to eight people. Despite this rugged capability, the Defender lineup is undeniably luxurious, adding a host of premium interior features and stylistic touches from the more opulent models.

Land Rover Autobiography is a trim level that is available on many of the models, including Range Rover Autobiography. Dynamic and HSE (for High Specification Equipment) are higher trim levels of Land Rover models. Every Land Rover Sport has a larger model without Sport in the model name.

Surprising facts about Land Rover

In the 1970s, Land Rover faced severe competition from Jeep and Toyota. As a result, it backed out of the US market. When the iconic Range Rover hit its stride, it was not sold in the US, although some models still made their way into the country via unofficial routes. Land Rover started US sales again in 1987.

Land Rover introduced its first crossover SUV on a unibody frame back in 1997 under the Freelander model. It set the foundation for many of today’s crossover SUVs and gained global notoriety. Some say it was far ahead of its time.

Where is Land Rover made?

Land Rover produces vehicles in facilities located in five different countries. Most Range Rover models are produced in the company’s home of the United Kingdom, while other Land Rovers hail from Slovakia, Brazil, India, and China.

Land Rover electric cars

Land Rover has many mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid options available, but it does not currently have a fully battery-electric vehicle on the market.

That’s about to change.

While the details are still limited, an EV Range Rover is expected in 2024. By 2030, Land Rover set its sights on 60% of its vehicles sold as electric. The brand wants to remove all emissions from its products by 2039, bringing some of the eco-conscious efforts seen in other brands like Polestar.

As many luxury automakers like Porsche step into the SUV world, a shadow looms overhead. The iconic Range Rover was the first to pioneer luxury off-road adventuring, and it stands tall as the benchmark.

The Land Rover Range Rover is now available in two different wheelbases with room for up to seven passengers. A twin-charged inline-6 with an optional plug-in hybrid helps deliver improved fuel economy, but the twin-turbo V-8 maintains its status as the top-shelf choice to rip down any path.

Sophisticated minimalist styling goes from bumper to bumper, while the interior uses premium materials to provide an endless array of customized amenities. No detail is overlooked, ensuring capability, comfort, and class.

Keep your eyes peeled for the 2024 release of the new Range Rover EV, catapulting the legend into the next generation. Perhaps someday it’ll be on our list of the best electric cars.

Range Rover Evoque

land rover brand range rover evoque - Luxe Digital

Land Rover has long been trailblazing through the SUV segment, and when the demand for compact crossover SUVs became evident, the company stepped up big with the Range Rover Evoque.

Like many in this segment, off-road sacrifices usher in an SUV aimed at keeping tires on the pavement. But it can still easily tackle slick conditions and has enough oomph to blast away from any stoplight. Even though it’s a small package, it’s not a car for kids.

The Evoque is undeniably fashionable, inside and out. A suite of driver assistance features keeps you safe, while a carefully curated interior uses expert craftsmanship. It has sufficient cargo space but is still nimble and a pleasure to drive through cramped city streets.

All without breaking the bank.

Turn to the inside to see the same upscale vibes as the more expensive models. And it also incorporates sustainable materials plus many enhanced safety features. All in all, the Discovery Sport hits the mark precisely where it’s aimed.

After years of keeping luxury amenities to a minimum, the latest Land Rover Defenders step up in every way imaginable and flood the interior with all the creature comforts you want.

The two-door Land Rover Defender 90 is the most nimble option, letting you crawl up rocks and turn on a dime. The mid-range Land Rover Defender 110 is a four-door package with similar capability. And the Defender 130 is an extended option with room for up to eight passengers and all your gear. You could even throw one of the best electric motorcycles or off-road camping trailers on the hitch.

Land Rover Freelander

Land Rover doesn’t fear forging new paths ahead. And when the Freelander came out in 1997, it beat many to the market with a compact crossover SUV. It was Land Rover’s first unibody vehicle and paved the way forward for many future models.

While production stopped in 2015, you can spot Land Rover Freelanders roaming trails and streets around the world. It gave excellent mobility on and off-road, all at a relatively affordable price tag packed with the usual Land Rover touches.

Eventually, the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport would come to fill the place of the Freelander and the Freelander II. But looking back in time, it would be hard to leave this innovative model off the list of Land Rover models.
